Water
Mt Frome’s water supply is a highlight of the property. There is a Bore with a licence for 117 million litres per annum.

The bore will run constantly at 6.25l/sec (my estimate drillers report says 15l/sec) and when used in conjunction with the dam pumps can deliver 20l/sec to the vineyard. This means that if required the irrigation can deliver nearly 150l to every vine on the property in 2 days.

There is also a 25 million litre catchment /bore filled dam, that is fully licensed for irrigation. All vineyard blocks are watered with properly designed, installed and maintained drip irrigation.

The house garden is approx 1Ha (2.5 acres) and is watered either from the dam or bore using the same mains and submains that irrigate the vineyard.

The bore water quality is excellent with salt levels below 300ppm. There are traces of iron in the bore.

The property has a small freehold river frontage for access to irrigation, from the river (if ever required) and to the bore.

This excellent water means that cropping levels at Mt Frome are very reliable.

Soils

Soil is free draining red basalt with limestone through the profile. As a result of sustainable practices used at Mt Frome the soils are in wonderful shape.

Due to the altitude and air drainage, Mt Frome Vineyard is one of the most frost protected vineyards in the district. It is virtually frost free during the growing season. No economic losses have ever occurred due to frost.

Cellar Door Licence

Mt Frome Vineyard has a Off Licence (Vigneron) cellar door licence. Current sales average 300 cases per annum.
Hazelnuts

In addition to the vineyard, Mt Frome Estate has a small Hazelnut nursery.

The original plan was to establish a 5Ha hazelnut plantation on some of the unused land at Mt Frome Estate. But there has been unsolicited interest from other growers in buying trees that we have decided to continue with the nursery. Expecting to produce 15,000 trees per year.
